Kitchen Team Lead

Position Details
  • Hourly Rate: $23.00 per hour
  • Hours: Up to 40 hours per week
  • Schedule: Wednesday–Sunday
    (Schedule may adjust for vacation coverage and special events.)
  • Start Date: ASAP
  • Compensation: In accordance with Ontario Employment Standards

     

Kitchen Responsibilities
  • Prepare nutritious meals and snacks for children
  • Follow strict food safety and allergy protocols
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen
  • Assist with meal planning and preparation for special events
  • Ensure compliance with childcare and public health regulations
 
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Monitor and maintain kitchen budget, ensuring cost-effective purchasing
  • Demonstrate strong time management and organizational skills
  • Place food and supply orders in a timely manner
  • Maintain accurate inventory records
  • Send emails, communications, and updates to families as needed
  • Coordinate with management regarding menu planning, dietary needs, and special events

     

Qualifications
  • Valid Food Handler’s Certificate
  • 1–3 years of cooking experience
  • Experience working in a kitchen where food allergies and sensitivities are strictly managed
  • Passion for cooking and working with children
  • Excellent attitude and customer service skills
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality
  • Must speak English
  • Must be legally permitted to work in Canada (valid work permit or status required)
 
Employment Requirements
  • Must pass a Police Background Check (including Vulnerable Sector Screening)
  • Complete all required policy and procedure training
  • Complete any required documentation as directed by the Centre Director
  • Collaborate with current kitchen staff
  • Report directly to the CFO
 
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Stand for extended periods
  • Walk frequently throughout the day
  • Crouch, kneel, stoop, and bend as needed
  • Ability to tolerate heat in a kitchen environment

development.

○ Facilitate interactive activities such as storytelling, singing, excursions, and
creative expression through art, dramatic play, music, sensory exploration, and
loose parts play based on the children’s interests.

3. Create a Safe and Supportive Environment:
○ Ensure the physical, emotional, and social safety of all children in compliance
with the standards of the Sarnia-Lambton Public Health Unit, the Ministry of
Education, and Lakeside Childcare.

4. Nature-Based Learning:
○ Integrate nature-based experiences (e.g., outdoor activities like nature walks) into
the programming to foster children’s connection to the environment.

5. Health and Hygiene Support:
○ Assist children in developing healthy eating, dressing, and toileting habits.

6. Assess and Discuss Children’s Progress:
○ Assess children’s abilities, needs, and progress regularly and engage in
meaningful discussions with parents and team members.

7. Administer Developmental Screenings:
○ Conduct ASQs (Ages and Stages Questionnaires) and ANQS (Australian National
Quality Standards) as directed.

8. Maintain Child-to-Staff Ratios:
○ Ensure child-to-staff ratios comply with Ministry of Education standards.

9. Supervision and Transitions:
○ Directly and constantly supervise children at all times and facilitate smooth
transitions between activities while ensuring their safety, comfort, and support.
○ Guide and give instructions to ECA on transition procedures.

10. Documentation:
○ Keep detailed written records of children’s progress and daily activities, including
using the Lillio app for photos and descriptions.

11. Collaboration with Families and Staff:
○ Build positive, collaborative relationships with co-workers, parents, and
community service providers to ensure children’s development and well-being.

12. Positive Behavior Guidance:
○ Foster positive behavior, self-regulation, and healthy self-esteem in children.

13. Contribute to Team and Center Operations:
○ Support a cooperative, healthy team environment and actively contribute to the
efficient operations of the center.

14. Meal and Rest Support:
○ Lead family-style meal service and assist children with rest periods and toileting
routines.

15. Classroom Cleaning:
○ Participate in maintaining a clean and hygienic classroom environment.

16. Policy Adherence:
○ Ensure full adherence to all center policies and procedures, ensuring the safety
and well-being of children.

17. College Registration Compliance:
○ Maintain an active and good-standing registration with the College of Early
Childhood Educators (CECE). Complete all CECE’s professional development
(CPD) requirements and stay up-to-date on early childhood education trends, best
practices, and regulatory changes.

Knowledge and Skills
● Strong verbal and written communication skills in English are required.
● Strong understanding of HDLH Ontario’s pedagogy methodology, play-based, and
nature-based learning.
● Familiarity with diverse learning styles and developmental needs in children.
● Understanding of trauma-informed care principles.
● Proven ability to build meaningful connections with children and families.
● Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
● Ability to work effectively under pressure and adapt to changing situations.
● Ability to physically assist children in program participation as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Early Childhood Assistant’s duties include, but are not limited to:

Program Support:

  • Assist in developing and implementing daily childcare programs that promote children’s physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development.
  • Use center planning tools and forms to document children’s progress and activities.

Activity Facilitation:

  • Support daily activities such as reading stories, singing songs, engaging children in outings, and providing opportunities for creative expression through art, dramatic play, music, sensory exploration, and loose parts play.

Safe and Supportive Environment:

  • Help create and maintain an environment that ensures children’s health, security, and well-being in compliance with local health and safety regulations, the Ministry of Education, and Lakeside Childcare requirements.

Staffing and Ratios:

  • Maintain child-to-staff ratios as per Ministry of Education standards.
  • Ensure the TRANSITION POLICY is implemented during room/gym/washroom/outdoors transitions to ensure all children are accounted for and safe.

Classroom Assistance:

  • Support the RECE with classroom duties, such as tidying up after meals, preparing for transitions, and assisting with general classroom management.

Health and Hygiene Support:

  • Guide and assist children in developing healthy eating, dressing, and toileting habits, ensuring proper hygiene and comfort.

Collaboration and Relationships:

  • Build positive, collaborative relationships with coworkers, parents/guardians, and community service providers working with children.

Supervision and Transitions:

  • Ensure full adherence to center policies and procedures related to the well-being and safety of children, including supervision protocols during transitions.
  • Maintain constant, direct supervision of children at all times. Ensure smooth transitions between activities, keeping children safe and accounted for.

Classroom Maintenance:

  • Participate in maintaining a clean, organized and safe classroom environment, following cleaning protocols.

Meal Support:

  • Assist with family-style meal service, ensuring children eat healthily and safely.

Diapering and Toileting:

  • Support diapering and toileting routines, following appropriate hygiene and care procedures.

Rest Period Support:

  • Assist children during rest periods to ensure they are comfortable, settled, and supported.

Program Documentation:

  • Support the documentation of children’s activities, observations, and progress as the RECE directs.
  • Policy Adherence:
    Ensure full adherence to all center policies and procedures to maintain a safe, nurturing environment.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Understanding of and respect for differences in children’s learning behaviors.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care principles (asset).
  • Ability to collaborate positively in a healthy team environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and work effectively under pressure.
  • Reading and writing skills in English.
  • Punctual, reliable, and quick to learn routines, names, and responsibilities.
